Day 3
You will be picked up at 9:00 a.m. at the resort
after breakfast and load all the gear you will want with you at
the camp. You and your gear will be driven out to the trailhead,
when we arrive please load all your personal items that you will
need for the day in your cantle bag (i.e., sunscreen, water bottle,
lip balm). The rest of your belongings will be taken to camp for
you.
Today's ride goes up historic Peck Canyon and
to a part of the ride you will never forget, Hells Gate. Pecks Canyon
named after Geronimo’s last raid into Arizona Territory. Peck
was spared but Geronimo and his band killed his wife and infant
child. We will be riding past all that remains of his ranch and
a grave marker of Mrs. Peck and their daughter. After we stop for
lunch we will continue through this colorful canyon and an on to
Hells Gate, named appropriately for its rugged terrain, craved out
by millions of years of rushing water. When we arrive at camp in
the late afternoon, appetizers and a hearty cowboy style dinner
will be underway. You can pick a tent or a place under the stars
to sleep.
Day 4
You'll awake to the sound of a crackling fire
and the smell of cowboy coffee. As breakfast is being made you will
be responsible for getting your gear ready to be moved to the next
camp. After a hearty breakfast you'll be grooming and saddling your
own horse.
Today’s ride will take us through a variety
of terrain, including rugged rock, grassy hills, blooming cactus
and beautiful views. We will be following the “Old Ruby Trail”
passing the ghost town of Ruby, once a thriving silver mining town
in the early 1900’s. After lunch we will continue east past
spectacular rock formations and down to the ruins of the Bartlett
and Sewitt ranch, which was also attacked by Apaches in 1886. Once
at camp, time to get out the cards for a poker game or set up the
horseshoe for a camp tournament. We will be staying in this lovely
grass and wooded area for the next two nights. After dinner, it’s
time for the best stargazing you will ever see.
